Depression from a Biblical stand point

Suicide is a topic that faces a ton of stigma in today’s Christian culture. People try to ignore it because it is uncomfortable to talk about. It is uncomfortable to think about the fact that someone can be living one day, and then take their life the next day. However, suicide isn’t a sudden thing, it is the result of a chronic feeling of depression and helplessness. Recently I was at a seminar about depression from a Christian standpoint. The speaker quoted Jay Adams definition of spiritually-rooted depression with is “a cyclical process in which the initial problem is mishandled in such a way that it is enlarged in downward spirals that eventually plunge one into despair…”. The speaker proceeded to say that there are two causes of depression: physical and spiritual. Physical causes may include mental disorders which can cause people to feel depressed at times. However a spiritual depression occur when we handle a situation differently than God intended for us to handle it, and then we feel despair. After a long time, these feelings can culminate in the single action of suicide. People commit suicide when they feel as if they have no escape from their problems. However this isn’t the case because we know that with God there is hope. According to the speaker, the way to get over spiritual depression is to “become like a detective”. We need to find which repeated action is causing this downward spiral and then we must fight it. However we know that we can’t fight it alone, we need the Lords help. We also need to be frank and truthful with ourselves
